The 6870 would have higher stock performance, but the 560 have more overclocking potential.
Both cards are about equal, but the 6870 should be cheaper.

Bad Company 2 likes radeon cards better, so I would be inclined to say the 6870.

The GTX 560 is also favored more in most games, so it runs faster even on stock performance.

Instead of GTX 560 Ti, i would advise going for gtx 460 instead. Almost same price range but the 460 performs way better. My friend bought 560 when i was going for the gtx460 and he now is facing some problems with it, while mine is performing way better. I am pretty sure my gpu can run bf3 fine when it comes out, so far it hasn't failed me on any game.
If you really want to buy 560 though, then save up a little and buy the gtx580 instead. Thats a beast.

I'm gonna say 6870. BF3 is optimized for AMD cpu/gpu. Very much optimized. I bought a 6850 myself to prep for it.

What. The. Hell.
The GTX 560Ti most definitely outperforms the GTX 460, but that's not even the card he's talking about here. He's comparing the GTX 560 vs the HD 6870 and even that blows the GTX 460 away.
Also the the GTX 580 costs over double what the GTX 560 costs, so it's not a 'little' bit that he would have to save to get it, it would be a shit load.
Oh and I would go for the HD 6870, partly because I feel like a fanboy since ATI (AMD now) is based in my city, but also because it generally outperfoms the GTX 560 (but not by a lot I must add) and is cheaper.
I managed to buy a HD 6870 for my build for $150 after MIR, and it was the nice ASUS Direct CU cooler one too. I foresee epic overclocking.

The GTX460 is priced way lower than gtx560 and there isn't much performance boost in the 560 considering the price it comes in. Both cards are based on the same GF104 GPU with the gtx560 being a tweaked version performing better (~20-25%). I happen to have a msi 460 cyclone which is overclocked and reduces the performance difference between the two cards to a low still costing lower.
The ATI/AMD is definitely a no-no, gtx560 outperforms the HD 6870 - check this review out. Plus there has always been bad driver support for ati cards and issues with most games so i would stay away from ati.
But hey, im not an expert on these things, i just read a lot of reviews when i was purchasing a card myself (the gtx560 just got out that time) and decided to go with gtx460 and im happy as a cow with it. The ati cards seems nice with their low price ranges but stay away from them.

Again, how many times do I have to say that OP is deciding between the GTX 560 and the HD 6870 NOT the GTX 560 Ti and the HD 6870. Don't bring reviews of the GTX 560 Ti into this because it has nothing to do with the discussion. Also, the GTX 560 is based on the newer GF 114 core, whereas the GTX 460 uses the old GF 104 core.
Now if you look at benchmarks for the GTX 560 located here, you will see that the stock GTX 560 beats the stock GTX 460 by 7-10 fps in most games, and you can just as easily get factory overclocked cards that perform even better.
Now if you look at the benchmarks again, the stock HD 6870 does in fact beat the stock GTX 560 by 1-2 fps in most games.
I don't know how it is where OP lives, but I got myself a factory overclocked HD 6870 for 150 CAD, and stock GTX 560s costs ~$40 more, making the HD 6870 the buy for me, but if prices are around the same for OP, then the cards are practically even, and it just depends on brand preference really.

Both can handle Battlefield 3 at stock. I played Battlefield 3 Alpha Trial with GTX 480 (Fermi) and everything is pretty smooth. Note that my GPU card is two generations ago.
