|
|
So..I just bought portal 2, downloaded it, started it up. Main Menu comes up, err okay everything's going fine. BAM game closes like you exited it or something. I tried verifying game cache and multiple other things from google and it keeps crashing. And it's not an immediate crash either, sometimes it'll be two minutes in start menu, 5 minutes, etc. But quickly I tried to start singleplayer, it fully loads right? So I'm like yes yes yes yes! And then...Portal2.exe has stopped working. Note: when it crashes at teh start menu there is no portal2.exe has stopped working. The game just closes. Please help, 50 bucks on a game i was already skeptical about is a lot to me. I could spend that 50 dollars else where. Anyways, I would very much appreciate it if any of you could help me. Also have any of you had these problems before?
also note that i reinstalled game already and updated my video drivers
nothing works so far
Specs:
Windows 7 Ultimate 32-Bit
Nvidia GT 220 1GB DDR3
Intel Celeron @ 2.4Ghz
(I don't think it's my specs, as I can run games like Black ops and mw2...)
Thanks in advance...(please help me, please)

He should be able to run Portal 2, I can run Portal and Portal 2 on my HP mini netbook which contains a Intel Atom, 3GB of ram and Nvidia ION.
As for the game, it's really really good!

Yeah if he can handle BO he can run Portal2. Try adding the Portal2.exe to Data Execution Prevention.
This says Vista, but DEP is present in Windows 7 as well, same method to add a program to it.
http://www.vistax64.com/tutorials/65790-dep-turn-off-programs.html
Could also try this one if the DEP doesn't work.
- enable the developer console in the mouse/keyboard options, then
- add " -console" (without quotes) to the Portal 2 launch shortcut
- once the main menu is loaded, inside the console type (again without quotes) "sv_cheats 1", then press enter
- type "host_timescale 1.5", then press enter, then launch your game

get the latest drivers, run the game in a window, and disable multicore rendering

i don't know why you would ever want to do this unless you like your game being sped up for no reason at all.

The var needs to be set back to 1, should have mentioned that in previous. Haven't tested don't have any issues running Portal2.

Since your skeptical about this game, you have to ask yourself, did you play the first game? If not you may not know the whole story to it and returning that for Steam credit won't be too bad. But before doing that, you did the following?
1. Update drivers like graphic card?
2. You manage to find out what is the detail of that error?
3. Set the game to compatibility mode and run it as "Administrator"
4. Run the game on another computer if you have it?
5. Possibility you got a botch download?
6. Why get the Steam version? Hard copy exists too.
7. Close all programs before launching the game including your web browser.

there is no real hard copy of portal, it downloads bits of the game through steam regardless and must be registered through it

Well, I have not played the first game, however i have watched a play through. SPOILER ALERT DO NOT CLICK THE LINK IF YOU DON'T WANT THE STORY TO BE SPOILED http://www.truimagz.com/host/gx01231321/folder1/asdasdasd.txt (not a download) That's pretty much all i know, but I really wanna play the game because I wanna play the puzzles with my friends etc etc. That is strictly the only reason i bought it ( with a little peer pressure lol). This is why i was skeptical about the game because i have never played #1 nor have i ever played a game similar to Portal (if there is one). Anyway, I have done all the things you have listed except #4 because i don't have another computer to try it on. Well, I do but its a Laptop. I'm not too sure it can run Portal 2 though. Specs: Intel i3 ULV @ 1.20Ghz (Quad Core), 4GB RAM, Integrated Graphics & an Nvidia Dedicated Card (Nvidia Optimus Drivers). However, I don't know what kind of Dedicated card it has or if it even has one. Well of course it has one because the Nvidia Optimus drivers, right? Er..but yeah, I really dunno what to do. I don't even know if steam will give me store credit... ;/

The specs on your laptop is actually much better than your desktop.
Core i3 is actually a dual core with HT, so you will see 4 CPU graphs in Windows. And Nvidia Optimus means this laptop has a dedicated Nvidia video card along with Intel integrated graphics. The Nvidia card kicks in when playing games or intense task and switches back to Intel when your doing basic stuffs like Word.
If my netbook which is 10x slower than your notebook can play Portal 2, I don't see how you can't play it on your laptop.

I don't know, laptop 1.20ghz seems really slow compared to 2.4, I'll give it a try. If it doesn't work i want my fuckign money back lollolol
.::EDIT::.
No, I'm afraid it's too risky too even login to my steam account on my laptop. Because my family members use it...I don't feel very safe using my laptop to play a game on.

Did you try adding the program to DEP? kls85 is right since it is logging an error, there should be more details in the log, either error log or event log. You never mentioned what sound card you have.
