I assume you are talking about PC games since you said wired connection.
This could be your specs of your computer, believe it or not. You see, internet connection is only used for data/value transfer on multiplayer games. The console or PC will do the rest.
Data transfer works in two ways: Reviving and sending
Receiving:
person1 \__server__you
person2 /
Sending:
you__Server__/ person2
*************\ person1
--------------------------------
Your computer decode the data and results in game changes through data values. If your computer is slow, meaning it can not decode it fast enough, it will lag your game.
