Cheat Engine

I've never got into processor instructions/Disassembling applications. But game cheating has captured my interest.

I am wanting to make a trainer, the problem for me lays in getting the information, to use C++ to programmatically make it behave after my request (I can do a little in C++, pointers ETC)

Can anyone who has worked on the BF engine tell me, if BF play4free (runs on BF2's engine) has some sort of protection for their memory addresses. I can't find health, etc. I've tried the normal Increment/Deincrement searching. I'd appreciate an Articel/Guide/post which can guide me in the right path to getting the right addresses.

Also, is ASM knowledge required?, i really hate to start learning a completely new language, and more complex than C++. I know how a computer works, and i know ASM isn't really "that" hard, when all the logical parts are understandable, but..:S
