I need a program that can convert mkv into other stuff like avi or mp4.
I've tried Total Video Conversion but it crashes when I start the conversion.

I highly recommend Xilisoft Video Converter 6.
I've used it to change the format of movies for my PSP and DS flashcarts. It's the best I've ever used.

Although it does cost money.

Better than Xili.
Yes I've tried both. This is the best one. Just go to subtitles, activate, select your subs ( assumingly .ass ).
Also don't choose the preset resolutions, just type it in yourself.

It's all just MP4 format. Set the resolution yourself.
I set it to Xbox/PS3 1280x720. Everything plays fine on my iPad.
