I'm trying to crack a game. I doubt anyone's heard of it because its small, sort of a niche, seemingly simple as dirt, and came out less then a week ago I think. Odd thing is the game runs two processes when started. I've tried finding the HP for both processes.

Pretty much until I began use "pause process" to search, pretty much every single "next search" would always come back 0 hits without fail. I played with what I was looking for. Unknown value with decreased, increased, or letting the game run for a bit and do a "unchanged value" next search. Nada.

Now that I'm having CE pause the game, it gets an ever-dwindling list of results while I try to track down an unknown initial value but it always drops down to 0 results no matter which options I try on either process.

Another interesting thing is that I found a timer slowly counting upwards. Not sure what it does ingame but I tried to reset it. No change. I tried to freeze it, no change. CE couldn't seem to prevent the value from changing.

I'm starting to think that Cheat Engine might be having some problems running rather then it just being a rather stubborn game to hack.

Does it sound like something's wrong with my CE? Could I be missing some configuration? Is this some odd type of game not covered by basic tutorials?

Seeing the game has 2 processes it's most likely protected.
(and if unknown initial value followed by changed value returns 0 addresses then you're in the wrong process or it's protected)

What you could try is enable kernelmode query memory region, read/write memory and openprocess in settings and then attach to the process (second one)

Also, the game might just be weird (e.g storing values as text)

And of course, make sure it's not an online game, because if it is just give up, you won't find anything useful

This word "protected" fills me with dread. Despite the game being too simple to likely require protection, the designer may have done it anyway.

This isn't some high class product, an online game, or something that money's been charged for so I don't feel bad trying to break any protection that it may have.

That said, any ideas on how to break protection or is that far enough advanced that I should pretty much just give up now?

Sounds like your game is packed with Armadillo (the two processes is the result of the CopyMem II option).

I guess this is a BigFish or GameHouse game. At least those are having the same protection.

Never heard of them. No this isn't one of theirs.

Edit: I'm looking back through my sources and I think it actually could have been pirated. So I'm going to give up for the time being.

Tempted to buy a legit copy if I can track down the company webpage... if I could hack it x.x
