Hello.

This is a very strange problem, and I'm out of ideas as to what the solution may be. It's a fairly new stock system(not mine). It's an HP Pavilion p6130y.

It originally had Vista installed and it was having the same issue. I upgraded to Windows 7, a fresh install, and the issue continues. When the computer is off for a period of time, it won't start up initially. So, I power it on, the lights come on, all of the fans come on, my monitor comes out of standby, and I get a black screen. That's it. It just stays that way as long as I leave it on. If I turn if off, and then back on, it will post, and I can load Windows.

When loading the new drivers for Windows 7, I did come across this:

http: //h10025. www1.hp. com/ewfrf/wc/softwareDownloadIndex?softwareitem=pv-85555-1&lc=en&dlc=en&cc=us&os=4063&product=3980095&sw_lang=

I did download it, and tried to install it, but when I reboot there's an error, and it reloads the previous BIOS config.

1 minute is not enough to reset bios

take the batetery off again, unplug your pc completely. wait half and hour and then put it back.

I left it out for 45 minutes, for good measure. Then I replaced the battery, plugged it back in, powered it on, and... black screen. Force powered it off, and turned it back on, and I got the black screen again. It took a couple of tries to get it to post this time. Anyway, the same problem remains. Any other ideas?

Removing the battery isn't always enough. In the bios is it holding the time/date after you shut off power? Even after removing the power chord? If not replace the cmos battery.

Also check your mother board manual on how to reset the cmos. Removing the battery will not always reset it. Usually there is a jumper pin that you have to move to the on or off position then power cycle the box, replace the jumper and the cmos is reset.

http://www.wikihow.com/Reset-Your-BIOS

Don't take that as the method to use. Not all boards will work using this method. I have seen boards with a jumper, some with an actual reset button, and others simply removing the power chord and the batter did it.

As for your bios update attempt. Go through the bios settings and make sure no one has set it to not allow writes.

When I put the battery back in, and got it up and running, the time was wrong. When I loaded Windows 7, the clock was also wrong, and it said my copy of Windows 7 may be counterfeit. I fixed the clock to the correct time, and re-activated it. I thought this meant that it did reset the cmos. I'll have to look into the bios settings later, I have to go to work. I'll check the thread again when I get home.

Yeah removing the battery does reset the time/date stamp. It may have also reset your cmos. If all the methods posted have not worked, you will have to find a way to update that bios to patch the issue mentioned in your link.

Rip out your videocard, preheat the oven to around 200C, and put your videocard in there for a few minutes, then let it cool.

If that doesn't work, try it with your mainboard (if your oven is big enough)

Lol. It's not my computer, and it's still under warranty. I was just trying to save someone the time and trouble that comes with sending it somewhere for repairs. I also don't like the idea that I can't figure out what is wrong, I don't like being stumped. I want to fix it myself, without baking anything, but I'm out of ideas. Thanks for the tip though. Smile

Getting the warranty for these things can be difficult because the testers often have hot working environments (lots of systems running) causing the hardware to expand enough so it functions

Try to explain exactly what happens when trying to get it fixed (e.g mention cold temperature)

It is either the GPU, cpu, or mobo.

There's a new symptom. I really had a hard time getting it to start, it took about 3-5 cycles to boot. Now, looking at the desktop, the screen started blinking/flashing. It did this for about a minute, and then it stopped.

Edit: Now it's flashing again. It does it for a minute or two, and then stops.

It is your GPU.
