I was browsing Wikipedia a little when I found this:
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Internet_censorship_in_the_People%27s_Republic_of_China

I'm honestly shocked about this:
- You're being monitored pretty much 24/7
- All the good/useful websites are blocked (YouTube, Facebook, Wikipedia, pornograpy and much more) http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_websites_blocked_in_the_People%27s_Republic_of_China
- If you complain about it from China (Posting it on Message Boards etc.) your message will be deleted within minutes
- If you say anything related to a corrupt government, you can get fined up to $1800 USD (15000 Yuan)

So what are your opinion on this? I personally think it's cruel and people should do something about this.

It's a difference in culture that works for them. Granted some of those are applied elsewhere in the world as well:

- You're being monitored pretty much 24/7
Can be said for just about anywhere in the world. ISPs monitor and record all traffic and have the right to terminate your account and service at their digression. Along with working with law enforcement to handle illegal activity.

- All the good/useful websites are blocked
That's a manner of opinion; and it's not something that other ISPs haven't done in the past either. I think it was Verizon, when they first really started pushing DSL, who were blocking specific sites to help prevent piracy. Various ISPs still attempt to block ports as well to prevent it as well as other activity.

- If you complain about it from China (Posting it on Message Boards etc.) your message will be deleted within minutes
This is more dependent on the location you live for things like this to be enforced. The states are getting to the point where what you say online is now effecting your actual life as in jobs can use what you post on things like Facebook against you and such. Not the exact same thing but it is similar in the sense that regardless of it being online it can be held against you.

It's just how they have ran their laws with internet usage. There are other places with similar and even more strict laws against how the internet is used. I can't speak for people of China but I'd assume if its been in place for as long as it has, they have learned to deal with it and aren't too worried about it.

You say it's cruel, but I see it as a somewhat decent idea to get people the hell off the internet more and into a park or some shit. The amount of people who rely on the internet to just live a daily life now is damned stupid.

I'd say that's not their biggest worry. Look into how much money their workers make in the sweatshops, and the conditions they work in.

Many work full time and don't even make enough money to buy their own food, let alone a place to live.

Pretty sure the government would overpower them.

Herbert Hoover - "The difference between dictatorship and democracy is simple: dictators organize from the top down, democracies from the bottom up."

Terrible president, worthy quote.

The Chinese people may revolt one day but nothing good will come of it. The only action that can change their political system is overthrowing the government, which is too big of a task for their people. International military's would need to intervene and all that would do is cause another World War and hundreds of thousands of innocent deaths.

Just think of it like Libya but supersized.

The same laws are being passed in America now too. I know England also has censorship on certain websites(I think you may be able to remove it if you ask your ISP though), pretty sure Germans have banned many, many violent video games and I'm sure other countries will follow suite, considering America just passed another censorship law. Australia will soon be one of the few censorship-free first-world countries left in the world. (Don't tell me about our censorship or how we ban games, the censorship will NEVER pass into law because we're a democracy and its a pretty universal opinion that the censorship does nothing but harm, and within the next year we'll have an R18+ rating so no games will be banned)

I'll have to admit, that is definitely a clever take on China's censorship. However, I'm pretty sure it isn't really why China restricts it's internet.
