Well, not breaking maybe. Figuring out what it is.
Before you ask: I already succeeded in patching the game memory so it disregards the check and i can load modified save games either way. I'd like to sign the files myself, though.
Since the game's saves are containers with plain-text xml files, they're easy to edit, there's just that checksum in the header that gets in the way. It's a 160 bit hash judging from the length. SHA-1, i thought, but i tried hashing various parts of the save file though it and it didn't work out.
I don't know much about checksums, i'm not even a programmer or coder at all, so i'm pretty much stuck. I only managed to disable the check in-game because the developers were very courteous in providing help. See attachment.
I guess if i knew a damn about programming or assembler, it would be pretty easy to figure out what's going on from there, but alas...
Is there any program that lets me calculate file hashes with customized algorithms? Like changing the salt on a SHA-1 or something? I don't really know much about how these work. Maybe i could play around with some different values i can find in the code then.
