Uses: Moderate - Heavy Gaming (Black Ops, BFBC2, Crysis 2, Homefront, etc, etc).

Questions: Is the PSU strong enough to handle everything within or do i need to go with a 700 - x Watt?

Anything better i can get for the same or lower price?

Should I get 6870 or something else...?

Notes:
Yes, I know i am using an old junky shitty socket. But the C2Q has proved to not be obsolete, yet at least. It's cheap and can do what i want it to do (to my knowledge lol). You guys can give me alternate builds like a Sandy Bridge or something, but I'd like to keep it under 700 but as long as it's under 800 i that's fine too.

Thanks in advance.

Right lets start on one of the most important part from a builders perspective the PSU: Good job, well done on that choice.

Good case & ODD

HDD is also a good choice that's what I always put in my builds a nice F3.

Ram has some OK timing (Cool but if you have a BIT more money go for these: http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16820231276 very sexy ram for the money!

The MOBO & CPU combo is the only thing left to discuss nwo because everything else you choose is a good choice for bang for buck.

You have 2 choices with the CPU & MOBO combo.

1: Intel Core 2 Quad Q8400 2.6ghz & GA-P43T-ES3G = 250
2: Phenom II X4 965 Black Edition 3.4GHz & ASUS M4A88TD-M/USB3 AM3 = 265
3: Go with sandy Bridge it's a small bit faster than 965 but ALOT less value for money.

I would personaly go for choice 2 as it will be quite future proof wheras as the 2.4GHZ quad is barely acceptable really - but it's all down to whether you want to have an intel or not your choice completely - either way you have made perfect choices on the rest of the comp!Very Happy

Have any question then ask me oh and I have a building guide at my website in my sig - hopefully it could help Very Happy

Thanks for the RAM. I think i'll go with the AMD build since it seems like a much better value. Only problem is i don't know much about AMD. Oh well, I'm sure it's not any different from an Intel Rig (I think). Let's just hope nothing's DOA... I also won't being going with that motherboard because it has no reviews. Nothing against you, just like to have multiple opinions. Makes me feel safer about buying it.

Are you suuure the PSU is fine? We just upped from a 95 Watt to a 125 Watt processor and a different MB.

Aha - that mobo was just an example so i'm glad you didn't take it seriously, that's a nice mobo you picked there & of-course you will be more than fine with that corsair 650w, trust me Corsair are amazing PSU makers I would compare that 650W corsair to a 850W+ unbranded/semi-branded PSU.

I have an older corsair 650W than the one you getting which is rated lower than yours and I can run SLI, Quad AMD, 8GB+ RAM and anything else I want at it really, If you get VERY high end GPU and have it in SLI then a 750W Corsair would be a safe bet, but hey - Chances are that won't happen and even if it did the 650 could probably pull it off, I literally wan't to make love to corsair.

Any other questions, just shoot away

oh and that CPU is very nice Black edition = expect to overclock to 4.5GHZ+ EASILY!! my crappy 840 phenom x4 can hit up to 4GHZ.

If I remember rightly I think it was an antec 750W PSU that I bought that just couldn't handle my setup... you get what you pay for when it comes to PSU's i'm afraid.

Above post is an OK suggestion if you want an Intel build (Minus the PSU & HDD, F3 is pretty much best bang for buck).

If you want a more and that CPU isn't too powerful for the price oh and you won't be future proofed at all really.

but meh - up to you Very Happy

oh and sorry for going off topic but I saw a 1.2KW psu for like £50 once so I thought WOW, so much wattage, who cares if it's cheap surely it should power a simple dual core/4750 pfft, overheated, shut down alot it actualy caused MOBO problems and all sorts Sad - moral of the story is to just buy a GOOD brand PSU for more even if it is lower wattage than the cheaper one it will most DEFINITELY be better, always.

No. The 965 BE has a horrible issue with voltage. I had to have mine set at 1.55v in order to get it boot at 4.1. Not only that, but your Northbridge will heat up tremendously. People struggle to reach 4Ghz with this CPU, don't get their hopes up.

REALLY?! rofl. blimey, but on the other hand this has a lot of features my quad doesn't so it's still worth the dosh & 4GHZ is by far enough, thanks for the info Very Happy (Think i'm going to upgrade straight to Bulldozer when their out)

Bulldozer will be a joke compared to the Intel 2011. The Bulldozer barely competes with the Sandy Bridge, and that's not even Intel's enthusiast line.

Hey I build intel rigs too i'm not a fanboy for either of them however I will be making MY rig a Bulldozer because I don't like to waste 3 times the money on a small amount of performance boost - don't like it don't reply.

And to point a few things out Phenom 2 x6 competes with sandy bridge and Bulldozer hasn't even come out so stfu if you think sandy has any comp with Bull.

oh and you do know that ADM already has 16 core chips ready for desktops already and intel haven't even started producing 6 core's yet, right? if ADM really wanted to and really cared about the money they could rush some 16 core chips out and fuck intel over but it's all about strategy, they did it once (in 1997 I think it was) they can do it again. either way - I personally want AMD in my rig you want intel in your rig, who cares, let's not compare.

comparing AMD to intel is like comparing PC to MAC. stupid.

erm...confusion underway. Should I go with Sandy Bridge, or Phenom? Not overclocking anything btw. Thank you kls, for your input. But as of now i'm a bit confused on what to go with.

It's completely up to you Despair if you want Sandy go with it
if you want a phenom go with it, they are quite equal really.

I think Sandy is meant to be a bit better when overclocked but if your not overclocking what's the point and AMD are usually future proof, my old SAM2 board lasted me through 4 generations of CPU's and this SAM3 will last a few more where as INTEL only last for 1-2 generations but it's completely up to you, I am a builder and work in a shop and am unbiase towards Intel, but if your on a budget you don't even have to think about the competition ROFL Very Happy

6 cores to compete against 4.
Quote:

Intel Core i7 980x is the fastest 6-core for desktops granted it is priced incredibly high.

No where did I say I wanted Intel in my rig. The last rig I made, which was back in January, has a Phenom II x4 965 in it. I'm just saying that Intel outperforms AMD if you compare the chips side-by-side, Intel beats AMD's chip.

And I was pointing out that Bulldozer will compete with the old 1366/1156 series at initial launch and their enthusiast will compete with the 1155. No where will they compete against the 2011 Intel will send out next quarter.

@OP
Sandy Bridge is broken down into two parts:
P67 and H67.
P67 is used more for gaming and programs
H67 is used more for media based applications (movies and the like)

If you plan to do overclocking, the 2600k is what you want. People are getting 4.5Ghz on those with air coolers and 5.5Ghz with water.

If you want an affordable chip that will still perform very well, then go for an AMD chip. For price/performance, AMD wins hands down. But if you want something geared more towards an enthusiast rig, Intel wins.

if you have money to spare intel wins, I know but I am talking about budgets here, if your on a budget though you have to admit AMD wins, right? Very Happy
