| Betterlight makes Minecraft look fucking gorgeous. I can't believe I didn't do this WAY sooner. What other mods should I download?

All of the visual mods can be, as well as minimaps. Besides, I don't think OP plays SMP.

| If I install a mod that's only compatible with singleplayer, what happens if I try to join a server? Will it not work, or will the mod just not be in effect?

Zan's Mod for minimap.
And yeah betterlight is amazing. I've been using it for months (back when it used to just be ambient occlusion).
If you have an nVidia card, look into GLSL shaders.

glsl mod did nothing except maybe FOV
though it did lead me to steampunk texture pack, which is actualy fking epic :l
