Why? I don't know much, but he basically want to access files on one computer to another. I said you can share files, and then he said that his computer was old, and kind of needed a new one.
Building a server, what do you do? No graphics card, right? All he does is store word documents for his business.

| he'd definitely rather use the shared documents folder (which I don't think he knows about) than upload every file (or archive).

My mom is even worse. I let her type an e-mail for the very first time...
When I got back 15 minutes later -I swear to god I'm not exaggerating- she was 3 sentences further with 20+ typos.

Definetely not an in-home server, unless it is one of those littel ones they sell in stores like Best buy now.
Or easier and cheaper solution:

or any shared web host.

Cheaper than a server, and if you connect it to a router or common gateway, you can connect to it from any computer on the network. Some of the higher tier ones also allow HTTPS\HTTP access so you can access it from anywhere on the internet with the proper credentials.
