The idea may seem completely dirty to anyone who doesn't smoke, and even those who do smoke and just don't think there is anything like it (or better).
Ecigs use a battery-charged heating element to vaporize a solution of nicotine dissolved in propylene glycol.
While propylene glycol is used in some antifreeze, it is also used to make snow cones, lotion, dog food. It is even the solvent that food coloring is used in, and a general food additive for preservation. In other words, it is completely safe for human consumption, and has been approved by the FDA as "generally safe".
Nicotine by itself is about as "harmful" as caffeine. It has roughly the same biophysical effects (neurological effects are different, obviously, but not dangerous) as caffeine. Nicotine does not cause cancer or any other health problems. The worst it does is constrict your blood vessels, which has happened to anyone who's ever been cold or had a bit too much coffee or soda in a day.
At the least, ecigs are certainly less harmful than regular old cigarettes. I shouldn't even need to point out why.
Now for some subjective opinions. I've used the standard Joye 510 for almost a year now.
There's a few main reasons why people smoke cigarettes:
1) Throat hit
2) Having something in hand
3) Controversial and less important, but dare I say... "coolness"
These three reasons lead to the sensation of "feeling like you're doing something", which causes satisfaction.
I'll tackle these one by one. Firstly, the throat his is just simply incomparable. What I mean by throat hit is pretty self-explanatory, but it means the feeling of the smoke/vapor "hitting" your throat as it passes down. This is important because otherwise you may as well be smoking flavored air.
It seems that throat hit is linked with nicotine content. Ecigs just completely dominate in this area. I always get the highest nicotine level ejuice, and ever since I have, newbies who try my ecig almost always cough because they weren't expecting it to be so strong. Throat hit is definitely better than analogues (regular cigs).
Secondly, having something in your hand. We all get that feeling of "having to do something with your hands". A good point to make here is that a cig may last 10-15 mins. Whereas an ecig is basically infinite. Not much else to be said here.
Thirdly, the coolness factor is arguably much better. Most non-smokers are disgusting by the sight of someone having an analogue. When you vape an ecig, their reaction is more of fascination. Smokers tend to be jealous and a bit "frightened", because they don't know much about it.
Which is why I'm writing this thread.
One more reason they are better... cost. Cigs will cost you about $5 day. I am a heavy vaper and an $8 bottle of ejuice lasts me about 1-1.5 weeks.
Then of course there are the other reasons like health, a huge variety of flavors, the ability to vape in places you normally can't or shouldn't smoke. No smelly breath or clothes, others can't complain.
Health is probably the biggest reasons, but it's not the reason anyone would switch. To summarize what I said, the reason someone would switch is simply because it's better. And to me the biggest reason it's better is the throat hit.
Oh and vapor production is huge, so you still get satisfaction from "seeing the smoke swirl". It looks just like smoke, but it's harmless water vapor.
Discuss.

Everything I have read on these, neither the FDA nor the World Health Organization has endorsed these things for consumer use. It's a "use at your own risk scenario".
Because they aren't bound by FDA or WHO, that means that manufacturers usually foreign can put any chemicals in them they want.
http://www.fda.gov/NewsEvents/Newsroom/PressAnnouncements/ucm173222.htm
Seems to me that at least with cigarettes they are at least controlled with what they can and can't put into them. The e-cigs are just totally unregulated, at least at this time.
They also contain diethylene glycol, which has been the cause of a great number of poisonings.
I looked long and hard at these things when they came out. I decided to just stick with cigarettes. It's better to stick with an evil that you know what it does rather than one that has not been tested long enough. For all we know these things could cause severe toxic shock to some.

If propylene glycol wasn't approved by the FDA, you definitely wouldn't be seeing it on the ingredients list of food coloring.
I suppose I left out a crucial detail that ejuice is almost strictly manufactured in the USA. Ejuice manufacturers use food grade PG and FDA approved nicotine, with FDA approved flavorings.
They do not contain diethylene glycol. Like you said, that would be poisonous, and completely stupid. The only two ejuice bases are PG and VG (vegetable glycerin).
The thing you are forgetting is that cigarettes are taxed more than any other product. Who taxes them? The government. Who puts out these biased reports against ecigs? Also the government. I really hate it when I have to say "the government is out to get you", but in this case it is true. If cigarettes were instantly banned like they should be, our economy would completely fall apart within days.
This is why it's illegal to grow your own tobacco or import it from other countries. Same reason it's illegal to produce your own alcohol in large quantities without expensive permits. The government makes money.
You are in more danger going eating at a fast food restaurant. Most of the time, there is no one keeping a really close eye on everyone washing their hands or handling food properly. They're in too much of a rush.
In short: China doesn't produce the ejuice you get from any reputable dealer, just the devices themselves. Any negativity you hear about ecigs, particularly from the government (which includes the lung association), is not relevant because of the conflict of interest generated from the government getting huge profits from the taxing of analogue cigarettes.
At the very least, you have to admit that ecigs can not be nearly as bad as analogues. Analogues are known to cause cancer and death. They contain tar, thousands of deadly chemicals, etc. Arsenic, benzene, formaldehyde, acetone, ammonia, the list goes on. When you have this many deadly chemicals all combined in a single package, even homemade meth starts to look like a better choice.
And at the very, very least... if you are seriously this concerned/paranoid about your health and haven't quit smoking because you are so addicted... then surely you wouldn't be going out of your way to simply made your own ejuice. It's actually very easy and you only need a few ingredients. But it's even easier to let someone else do it.
Ecigs are allowed in hospitals, recommended by doctors, and encouraged by non-profit, non-government organizations.
The fda.gov website you linked to is obviously propaganda, but even a regular news site would not be any better for the simple reason that bad news is more interesting than good news.

Sorry but reported.
Also that's a really shitty ecig, obviously purchased from a gas station. Horrible vapor production, clearly an automatic battery, and probably no flavor.
The best ecig (or more properly, the best atomizer) is the Joye 510. Its atomizer is unparalleled in efficiency and longevity. Those ones you get from convenience stores that actually look like real cigarettes are a joke. More of a kids toy than anything.
The problem is that they are quite appealing to smokers who haven't vaped yet, because their physical similarity to cigarettes helps reduce their skepticism. But it's actually a marketing scheme by the gas stations themselves... people will try them, be completely disappointed, and go back to purchasing cigarettes at $6 a pack, which the gas station makes a killing off of.
If you want a quality product, you must go online and purchase from a reputable website dedicated solely to ecigs. I happen to be fortunate enough that one of these enthusiast websites happens to operate his own retail store in my area.
If you want the truth about ecigs, read about them on ecig forums (the first link when googling "ecig forum". Stop by the legal section first, then the health and safety section, and you will see what I mean.

@ipivb
Thank you. I wasn't aware there was a US manufacturer making the stuff that goes inside them now.
Learn something all the time.
So you know, I looked up E-juice. They don't use any type of glycol in their formula.
If the data that E-Juice purports their product contains then they would be less harmful to the body than smoking.

i know what it is and i've used it once before. it was the swedish stuff and felt like smoking an entire pack at once nicotine wise.
you don't inhale pipe smoke (normally) but that doesn't make it any less dangerous. you trash your mouth instead of your lungs.

Nope. here in norway, the warning label says : this tobacco product MAY be a harmful and is addictive. And norway has pretty tight rules on these sort of things.

Thanks sorry if I came off a little harsh. Most ejuice does use propylene glycol though, but it's harmless:

Agreed. Tobacco itself, even in its most natural form, is anything but harmless. It's not an ordinary smokable plant. It's different from weed, damiana, marshmallow leaf, etc in the fact that it has such an enormous amount of carcinogens and poisons.
You're better off smoking tampons, or better yet, an ecig.

reason 4) Oral fixations.
You love having something in your mouth, e0ven though in the long run it'll give you breath strong enough to tranquilize a horse, and teeth so yellow that a zombie would be jelly over.
But meh... what do I care? Smoke all you want if it floats your boat. Your health, your habits, your ways of ruining your body with unneeded substances.

What was the point of your post? Cigarettes are more addictive than heroin, and it's not the nicotine that makes them addictive. That's why patches, gum, etc just simply don't work... smokers don't smoke for the nicotine, they smoke for something to do.
Ecigs have nicotine but for me, I don't vape for the nicotine. It just gives the vape a better throat hit. You can get ejuice with 0% nicotine but it'll be like vaping air.
After vaping all day my breath smells like pop rocks and since I've quit smoking, my teeth have definitely gotten brighter (and my taste buds improved).
There is one part of your post I do agree with though. You shouldn't care what others do -- that's the whole point of the idea of freedom that America is based off of. However it's still irrelevant to this thread, because we are talking about a safe, unharmful alternative to cigarettes that work almost exactly the same way.
