|
|
So after the mishap with my computer just a couple days ago, i had to get windows reinstalled. And I had to take it somewhere to get reinstalled. And I want a Windows 7 disc so i can have it handy if something goes wrong. So basically, what's the difference between OEM, Full, and retail? And why is OEM so cheap? O_o So yeah.....if anyone could explain the differences between the three that'd be great. Thanks in advance : )

OEM is meant for one computer only. You have to call Microsoft to explain why you need a new key if you're moving it. A big enough upgrade will invalidate the key.
Retail lets you install it on different computers, but only one at a time.

OEM is for the people who build the computers to sell to users. e.g. computer shops or companies like HP or Dell, etc.
Retail, is what a normal person would go into a shop and buy.
E.g. Windows OEM is only to be used on hardware you're building in the shop as a retailer. Retail is for everyone else to use.
Slovach: You're getting your words mixed up.
HP (and the like) calls the stickers on their computers OEM because that is what they are, Original Equipment Manufacturer licenses. You can move them around freely, because you do own an official license. Microsoft doesn't hardware-lock it's installs unless they're for embedded systems like POS (point of sale) units.
Edit: Oh, and full is just what salesman say. Ignore their bullshit. (Unless it's to do with certain program licensing, like "Limited edition, $19.99. Full version only $28509328093.22!"

The only thing you gain from ultimate is bitlocker (drive encryption, there is no point for a home user or even normal businesses).
The only thing you gain from pro is the ability to join a domain (you have your home network as a domain? wtf is wrong with you?)
Home premium is fine.
Edit: If you can get an OEM license, get it.
They aren't gonna get the cops onto you because you bought an OEM license.
My recommendation: Home Premium OEM. Save yourself like what, $200 on ultimate retail? Get more RAM with the extra money you have.

Zac is right. At work we use Win 7 Pro, no ultimate here. There is no need. We do need Pro, due to having a domain to log into.

Wish I could buy more ram. Already have 4GB. I have a 32-bit system. And you can't upgrade from 32-bit to 64-bit without completely wiping the drive and doing fresh install. And I need to buy something like killdisk to do that (more money).

You don't need to wipe your harddrive for a clean install. Where did you get that idea from? Also 4gb of RAM is plenty for gaming, unless you will be working on multiple files in PS.

I thought you couldn't upgrade from 32-bit to 64-bit without wiping your hard drive. hm. I only have 2GB usable for some reason though. Guess it's in cache, plus my GPU is taking 700mb of the 'cache' because it says it has 1700mb (700 mb shareD). Not that i would buy new ram anyway, I am getting a gaming rig anyway.

Yeah seriously, it's really really good.
Beats the 5870 considerably in some games, while being $50 cheaper.
I just bought a 5870 earlier this week...

Even beating the 6950 at 1920x1200. Nice OC potential as well, possibly even rivaling an OC'd 6970.
*regrets buying 460 4 months ago*

The only games it manages to beat is only when it's running TWIMTBP titles.
3 out of the 4 titles by that review site were TWIMTBP, except for Dirt 2.
Tom's show a benchmark of Metro 2033 which is also a Nvidia biased game and AMD cards even the HD5870 manages to out perform the GTX 560 Ti. These days if they want you to believe in a card that's good even when it's not, they'll do anything to make you think it is, when it's not. Only the uneducated will be fool by this nonsense.
