I don't follow consoles these days, and I wouldn't give my money up for another crap COD, though I hear they are better on consoles. I'm old school and think FPS belongs on PC not on console. But what would sway me if I were looking was which console will give you the most for your money, both in terms of games and what other things the console will do, I know PS3 plays blue ray, do you have a blue ray player already? Does Xbox play blue ray?

I have Xbox 360. No Xbox LIVE.
You should buy both xbox and ps3 if you have the money.
Otherwise, choose xbox for cheaper games but higher cost for LIVE.
I believe PS3's online only costs about $8 - $10. And for the xbox it's $40(Silver) or $80(Gold).
The choice is yours!

Silver allows free access to the DLC/addon/XBLA section of the Xbox dashboard and lets you set up chats w/ friends, iirc. Basically all Gold does is let you play online. I think. |
Play online and use Party Chat.
Party chat is where a lots of people can join a chat even when in different games. EG, I'm playing COD while my friend is playing NFS while another friend is playing Halo.
How dumb is that in PS3 that I can't talk to a player in a different game or something.

seeing the ps3 can now run usergenerated programs I'd say go with the ps3. Way more options than just games

Xbox does not play Blu-Ray discs.
OP, here are my thoughts.
Xbox has better support for online, however the price tag for that support is pretty steep. For the best experience for multiplayer and FPS games go Xbox. (Keep in mind the community is terrible, but if you have friends you can just lobby with them.)
PS3 has the best exclusives when it comes to variety. I doubt that you won't be able to find at least 5-6 games that look good to you from the exclusives. Personally, I believe that if you play the same multiplats online, you'll have a better time with the game on the Xbox, that said, the community for PS3 is much more relaxed and chill, they don't talk a lot. Also, free online+free wireless connection, a wireless adapter (router?) for Xbox is 100$ last time I checked.
tl;dr:
PS3: Best singleplayer or co-op experience, and actually will end up being cheaper in the long run.
Xbox: Best multiplayer experience, great FPS exclusives, and the largest number of multiplats (iirc).
Also, for god's sake, DO NOT SET EITHER OF THESE VERTICALLY. |
Uhm as for the wireless adapter costing money for Xbox thats not true. With the new xbox 360 it is built in now. As for Xbox vs ps3 i agree with you all the way.

Better for COD that would be ps3 except for Black Ops which was buggy as hell.
But with the PS3 you get Blue ray player, and the best games graphics wise. It is also a lot easier to use user generated programs and some *shadier* backup launchers. |

Dark Byte hinted at it but I'll just go ahead and say it. PS3 = jailbreakable (if you can get one with firmware 3.41 which may be hard after christmas). That means you can... well, "backup" games (that you legally own of course  ).
I would get the most enjoyment out of all the great exclusive mainly single player games like Ratchet and Clank, MGS4, etc... with the 360 you pretty much have GoW 2.
I almost camped out overnight to get a PS3... showed up at 8 pm and was already too late. So I said screw it and bought a 360, which died after about a year (and scratched discs constantly for no reason). |

I'll look into what games I can own but do ps3s break as easily and Xbox 360s?

Remember, he bought his 4years ago. Now the failure rates have evened out and now they are equal. The difference? Your xbox repair is free.
