The tutorial is a pretty simple program, not a real game. In a real game, the value that You found it usually not the base address of the data structure. In the tutorial however, it is very simple.
If it would be a real game and You would have two codes like:

Code:

mov esi,[eax+44]

and

Code:

mov esi,[eax]

than You would definitely try to find the pointer based on the first code because in eax+44, eax would be the base address of the structure.
