Would it be possible to hook up my PC to my TV (which both have HDMI slots)? I've tried it and I can't get it to work, will I need a VGA cable?

Yes.
unless you are using the TV as a third display, then no.
(unless you are 3d, eyefinity, matrox, or other multi monitor solution)

You can hook up your computer to HDTV via HDMI. You will have to set your HDTV to the HDMI port your computer is connected.

Make sure you set it to the right resolution for your HDTV.

When I hook my PC up through VGA I have to select the PC Source, I don't know whether HDMI requires that as well or a HDMI slot. I would imagine the latter, you shouldn't need anything but a HDMI cable.

Did you connect your HDMI cable to "HDMI 1" on your HDTV?
Update your graphic drivers.
You can also hook everything up first, power on your HDTV and then your computer.
