Ps3 usb is not the same as PC USB you need a different driver. there is one out that should work for you google it.

I play MS with a PS3 Controller, and L4D2 all via PC.
PS3 USB Cords, are EXACTLY usb 2.0 cords.

USB Mini*. USB 2.0 is simply a faster version of USB, however it looks the exact same as regular USB and fits in the same slots. Mini/Micro USB are the smaller ones.

It really isn't that difficult to set up the PS3 controller thing. Sure the directions are backwards as fuck, but if you know what you're doing it's pretty easy.
