This is a known problem, it's been asked numerous times here as well & it's been the same answer every time.

You can't.

Some guy posted about a program a few days / weeks ago that was told to do this but I haven't checked it out (just googled it but found nothing of interest), so I still assume it can't be done.

He wants to have two monitors, on one of them he wants a full-screen game and on the other his desktop. He doesn't want the game to minimize when he alt-tabs to the desktop (he wants it to be full screen wherever his mouse / actions on the computer is)

Sadly the closest thing you can do to that is hoping the game has a Window Mode.
(Try Alt+Enter - it's usually the hotkey to activate window mode)

Same, I looked into it but found nothing about not minimizing fullscreen entities when they lose focus, which you'd think would be a big deal.

Is it possible to chuck it in say, a virtual machine like-thing and focus it in it's own window?

A bit like NeXT 2 Window Manager possibly?

I've been wanting to test this out for a while. My guess would be that it would only work if you put the game in the VM, which would obviously be very taxing on performance.

Yeah, maybe.

Depends on your machine really.

Say you've got 8GB of RAM and an i7 processor, you should be able to run the VM with say, 6GB and it should run pretty smoothly. Not sure on how things like the graphics card would cope though.

It really doesn't depend on your machine, running something through a VM is likely to give you terrible results. Could you do it on weaker games if you had a top of the line machine? Sure. Does that mean it's a good idea? No.

Well, not necessarily.

I've seen an i7 950 running a VM with some stress tests and it was pretty stable.

Personally I had no problem playing in window mode and using shift+tab to unlock my mouse and use firefox on my 17 inch screen.

But it wasn't long before I just bagged the two screen thing altogether because it's useless and desk cluttering, and I have friends who might actually have use for a perfectly functional 17 inch monitor.

It's not useless. Personally, after switching to two monitors, I can hardly use a single monitor. I just feel really restricted.

After using three monitors, i never went back.
Also, don't you hate it when your relative call monitor a computer?
