Couldn't someone achieve true photo-realistic graphics just by only rendering the faces of models and textures that the player sees? I don't understand why people don't just do that these days. It seems much less resource hoggy.

But if only one side is rendering, wouldn't there be more processing power available? I most likely don't know what I'm talking about, but having more optimization can probably mean being able to render some pretty realistic models at a decent framerate, right?
