Looks like some China man in a bowl making factory took the liberty of sticking a pointy metal object into that damn thing and damaging that bit off.
Doesn't look like manufacturing defect as the way I see it, those plastic pieces are created through a mold so it's all done by machines. And machines don't make mistakes.
And providing a link to that source will be nice.

Looks like just 1 card had an issue. Thats like saying because you had to RMA an object that all of that object are bad.

The images from TechPower UP and Lab501 both seems have clean cuts, while the one at Chiphell does not. As mentioned in my eariler post, seems they use a thin sharp object to pry that part off.
I'm guess they had to do it because of their cooler design as that bit gets in the way. Since AMD don't make their own cards (ATi used too a long time ago), what's important is to find out which manufactures makes cards based on the image from Chiphell.
After some digging, seems the only card without that cut is AMD's self built, but they're just for reviews and not for sale?

The cards from TechPower UP both HD6950/HD6970 are by HIS.

If the pin ended up fucking up the card, i would feel really bad.
I accidentally implied to my friend that he should buy the 69xx at launch.
I'll just pretend that never happen if his computer ever catches on fire.

what am i looking at here, power connector is 6+6 instead of 8+6?
if 8+6 is the reference design then you as a buyer should be confirming before hand that the manufacturer is in fact not deviating from it. there's ups and downs to non reference cards.

The HD6970 uses a 8+6 where as the HD6950 uses a 6+6, both are reference design. Anand has a pic of the HD6950, but the fan is in the way so you really can't see anything.
Found some other close up shots, and looks like even AMD's own reference cards has the same "cut"? There is even a close up top view to see how the cooler interferes with the PEGs.
