Why would you not plug in the front i/o and only the usb?
What possible reason could they have for that?
Anyway now my front ports are working and I don't have to do acrobatics and move furniture to plug in my headphones.

two pcs ago the front usb entrances were fried so that if they were hooked up the pc wouldn't boot because they drew too much power.
thats one reason.

No the cord was split into an alternate input that only had the usb wires, see pic.
I unplugged that one and put the thicker cable in hoping it had the audio i/o, and sure enough it did.
Only problem is some electrical static that I don't hear in other jacks.
