| Where 2 get? Admittedly, I haven't actually done any mining, I've just sort of dug out some coal, made stone tools, and stole tree trunks (all of the trunkless trees look kind of ridiculous). Is there a special way to find caves with good stuff in them, and then how do I find my way back to my house?

A = air
I = iron bar
AAA
IAI
AIA
mine near bottom of map
click lava with bucket
click lava bucket in place you want lava to be (inside glass case)
or for lightstone
go to hell
seriously, go to hell
find shining yellow rock on ceiling/wall
mine it
put dust in either 2x2 grid or 3x3

I've been thinking spelunking was exploring deep caves my whole life ;-;
But yeah, anything from 2x1 to 5x3 staircases are good

Lava is not a stronger light source than torches, they're both 14.

(iron and coal can appear anywhere. this is just the more common places)
Try to roam around caves as well.
They easily have lots of iron.
