Shared hosting is remotely using "someone" elses computer and your sharing it with multiple people (even worse if it's oversold).
VPS's allow you to maximize your servers capacity by running multiple servers off one server. There are ofc a lot more reasons.

You don't seem to realise that VDS and VPS are different words for the same thing. You then randomly dragged in virtualisation and load balancing when they are completely irrelevant to the comparison of the two terms. Stop pulling shit out of your ass.

I have my own desktop computer here at home, why not just use it?
The electricity bill is $2 a month to leave a energy star certified desktop and monitor on 24/7, and internet is pretty much everywhere these days, so I don't see the point in renting a dedicated or virtual server at all.

Lack of load balancing, limited/slow bandwidth, slower IO devices (servers tend to have very fast IO latencies). Commercial servers also have specialised hardwares to ensure low failure rates or use hardware redundancy to prevent complete failure. The list pretty much goes on for a while..
At the end of the day, it depends completely what sort of project you want to do. However something running from your home desktop is unlikely to be able to scale up if your product/service ever becomes big.

Ok so yeah if I wanted to host a MMO for thousands of people to play I'd need a load balancing server with all the perks, but for anything simple like a minecraft server my desktop should be fine right?
8gb ddr3 AMD Phenom II x4 with xfinity internet from comcast (I get over 2MB/s up or down if the server is within 500 miles, so anywhere in the US should run smooth)

Also DDoS protection is a nice feature of some servers. If someone gets pissed at you that is.
