I don't understand why anyone would pay to place blocks in multiplayer.

Godcraft went P2P when too many griefers found out about it. It has been F2P before, and people that got in before contributions haven't been forced to pay or anything of the sort. P2P or Contributions are the only completely effective way to get rid of griefers, and it was in fact that reason solely that convinced Kane to implement it.
Now if you would stop mentioning Godcraft and their 'pay scheme' every single time I make a Minecraft related thread, that would be lovely.

If you don't want to pay for access to a SMP server that's totally fine with me. This thread might even convince you to join Gearcraft instead.

I considered joining it, I would've joined Godcraft if there wasn't a price tag on it. Incidentally, I only mention it when it's mentioned, not in Minecraft generals.
