The “Meet the Team” series of videos was originally released with the first video “Meet the Heavy” on May 14, 2007. It served three purposes, to promote the personality of the game, to promote the game itself, and to test various facial expressions with the game engine. “Meet the Heavy” is nearly word for word the audition script used to cast the character, in the other “Meet the Team” videos, there is much more new material. Aside from describing the personalities of the team members, it has also affected the game play. As said before, they use the videos to test the facial animations, and they also bring new game play elements from the videos. In the “Meet the Scout” video, released in April of 2008, a heavy is seen eating a sandvich, and in august of that year, the sandvich was added as an item in game. Besides the “Meet the Team” videos, they also have some comics, and two series that go into more detail with some of the characters. The first series had the BLU soldier and the RED demoman create a friendship, which was later destroyed, and the second is about the engineer, his father, and grandfather.

The engineer (whose real name is Dell Conagher) is from Bee Cave, Texas. He has 11 hard science PhDs, he likes barbecue, guns, and higher education. He is generally nice and has a mild manner in all things. The comic series he was in was centered on a machine that his grandfather theorized and his dad made, a machine that makes a person immortal. He’s supposed to fix the machine, because it is degrading. He is given the blueprints for all of his grandfather’s inventions, and instead of fixing the machine, he makes some new weapons. One of which, the gunslinger, is a robotic arm, he cuts off his right arm and replaces it with this. The engineer used to be 1 of the 2 people on the team that didn’t have any medical problems, but that changed when he got the gunslinger. His “Meet the Team” video is of him playing the guitar while his sentry guns kill everyone coming towards him.

The Soldier (real name Jane Doe) though not given a specific birth place, is said to be from the Midwest of the U.S. He wanted to fight in the 2nd world war, but when he was rejected by every branch of the military, he taught himself how to fire weapons and bought his own ticket to Europe. He then went on a Nazi killing spree in Poland, only stopping in 1949 when he heard that the war had ended 4 years ago. The soldier is generally seen as crazy and not to smart. He constantly shoots rockets at his feet to propel himself into the air. The BLU soldier met the RED demoman at a projectile weapons expo, they became friends, but later tried to kill each other for new weapons. He lives in a small room with several locks on it. His “Meet the Team” video is him giving a mangled version of “The Art of War” to a line of decapitated heads with helmets on, pretending they are cadets in the army.

The demoman (real name Tavish DeGroot) was born in Ullapool, Scotland. He lost his original set of foster parents at 6 years old in a plot to kill the Loch Ness monster. Later in grammar school his bomb-making skills improved dramatically, though he lost an eye. Eventually his prowess in explosives spread, and his real parents came to the school and explained that all demomen are abandoned at birth until they show they can make explosives well. He had a friendship was the BLU soldier, but they fought each other for new weapons. He lives in a mansion in New Mexico with his elderly mother who has lost both her eyes. She complains that any good demoman shouldn’t have both of his eyes past 30, and that he should have more jobs. His “Meet the Team” video is him sitting at a desk in a room filled with explosives while he talks about why he is a good demoman, and that he’s a “Black Scottish Cyclops,” with footage of him killing a several people with a grenade and a trap made of sticky bombs.

The Heavy was born in the USSR. He is the biggest of the team, and carries around a minigun which he calls “Sasha” and attends to it lovingly. He constantly calls the opposing team small, babies, or teeny-men. While he is bigger than anyone on the team, the sniper is actually taller than him. The heavy seems to be obsessed with American pop culture, he has a hat that’s an Elvis hair do, a hat that’s a football helmet, and one of the taunts he uses while holding the sandvich is from the cop films of the 60-70s. He is slow-thinking, and while he agrees that people can outsmart him, he has yet to see a person that can outsmart a bullet. He is very aggressive, and even sings while killing people. His “Meet the Team” video is of him talking about Sasha with footage of him killing people with it at the end.

The scout was born in Boston, Massachusetts; he is the smallest and fastest of the team. He is always very loud and active, even being able to jump twice. He had 7 older brothers growing up, and learned to out-run his siblings. His hyper-activity is assumed to come from the “Bonk! Energy drink” that he constantly drinks, it is made up of “sugar, radiation, and water.” He breaks the 4th wall several times through his taunts and responses. His “Meet the Team” video is him talking highly of himself and footage of him battling a heavy for his sandvich.

While a few of the characters are not well-defined, the ones that are generally have a good description and some of them (Demoman, Soldier, Engineer) have even shown their personal lives and names. I think that the characterization of the people makes the game much more interesting, though in most cases, it just makes me angrier when I die.
