Heres the thing

I want to be able to control or access my dads computer from my computer

My dads computer is in another office far away from home

Is this possible with or without any software?

I know windows has it ( Both computers have win 7 ultimate ) but is it efficient and easy to setup?

Any help or suggestions are welcome

Oh and is it possible that the other computer is turned off while using remote desktop on this computer?

Windows build in remote desktop isn't that easy to get it running.
If you go and check on them YouTube tutorials it might look easy, but what they're doing is controlling another system withing their same network and not from another location.

In order for you to control your dad's PC, you will need a static IP, if their ISP is dynamic then it will be difficult for you to have a constant connection to the same computer.

Also what's this remote purpose for?
If it's for helping out then use Team Viewer.

And the PC in the office has to be on, if you want to control it.

Remote desktop is relatively easy to setup, but requires a step which is different for each household. This pertains to the router setup. In the router you need to forward the port '3389' to the internal IP address of the PC you wish to use Remote Desktop on. In some router there is a function called 'RDP' which you can enable so it forwards the port automatically the computer you wish to assign it to. So if you wish to enable remote desktop on your dads computer, you have to go to his office, get into the router, set port '3389' to forward to his PC in their intranet, and then you're done.

The computer itself is easy to setup, go to start->right-click Computer->select properties->settings for external connections->allow connections with other computers, disregarding the version of remote desktop (less secure)->press ok->done. Then on the other computer you just type 'mstsc.exe' into the search bar in the start menu, and you can login using the username and password you used when enabling remote desktop on the other computer.

You can not use remote desktop if the remote desktop computer is turned off.

EDIT: Of course you also need the IP of the place you wish to connect to.

His Office Computer connects to the internet by wireless
He needs this remote control because on the weekends he is hardly at the office and sometimes he may need to send files to his cilents or change some documents

I'll check out Team Viewer

I dont know much about static ip, etc but if its possible to control his computer i'll look into it

maybe if you get your dad to get and use hamachi with you (( hamachi creates a virtual LAN ))

there is also a way to modify the reg of Remote Desktop and make it connect to other IP through open ports but it is kinda complicated. If you wanna check it out just google it.

If your dad's computer is in another office, why not have the IT staff there set him up with Remote Anywhere. If there is an IT staff there, why do you think you will be able to bypass their firewall to get this running?

Real IT admin's will notice that kind of connection, and it probaly their job setting up this for the empoyies.

But i would go for Logmein instead of teamviewer since somebody needs to accept the connection.

UNLESS, if you make a user'
login at both with the same user and run this script (Autoit 3)

EDIT: Just noticed that is has the norwegian window names :/ Anyone know the english ones?

Code:

HotKeySet("{PAUSE}", "TogglePause")
while 1 = 1

dim $nr
   If WinExists("Fjernstyring (rask tilgang)") then
   ControlClick ("Fjernstyring (rask tilgang)","","Button4")
   $nr = $nr + 1
   ControlClick("Fjernstyring (rask tilgang)","","[CLASS:Button; INSTANCE:4]", "left",1,178, 34)
   ControlClick("Fjernstyring (rask tilgang)","","[CLASS:Button; INSTANCE:4]")
 EndIf
 sleep(50)
WEnd

func TogglePause()
   dim $i
    MsgBox(1, "nr", $nr,10)

EndFunc

If your dad's office has a staff of IT, and they are running a corporate firewall, his computer will be able to access the internet, but it does not necessarily mean that connections will be allowed in. Not to mention forwarded to his computer in the office.

It's similar to at your house, you have a modem connected to your router which has several computers connected to it. You are trying to host a multiplayer game so you can talk smack in CSS, so you start up the server and pass out the IP to a few of your friends so you can play. Given a routers default configuration, the port that the game uses will not automatically know what computer is hosting the game, assuming the port even accepts incoming traffic, which by default most do not. You have to go in and forward the port to the computer hosting the server before your friends can join you. If at his office there is a firewall, you will not be able to accomplish anything no matter what you use.

That is why I said let the IT staff at his office do this for him.
