|
|
my desktop broke a couple of weeks ago and I thought about buying a laptop to avoid such problems.
Anyways, I'm getting my laptop, but I'm also fixing up the desktop so I can do other things that I can't do on my new laptop. (FO3 <3)
So............
here's my problem/question:
My vid card(a R-HD 5770) is dead , I need a replacement.
Will getting a 5870 make any major difference over getting a 5850? Or can I get a 5850 and expect to play any modern game on high settings without any probs?
---
on a side note,
what's crossfirex?

Any suggestions on a Nvidia card?
HD5870: The fastest in terms of single GPU solution
HD5850: The 2nd fastest and cheaper
I got a HD5850 and can run games at 1920x1200 with smooth frame rates.

Here we go again with the suggestions of ATI only cards while no suggestions of nvidia cards (such as the GTX 460). The GTX 460 768MB/1GB version both have a higher price than a HD 5770 but lower than a 5830 and the 5850. But it performs at 5830/50 levels if you overclock it, even at stock clocks it is on par with a HD 5830. While if you were to choose to SLI later it would be better than a GTX 480 by about 30%. Also the card idles in the 27-30C's and at load gets no higher than 75C on full load (this is at 70% fan speed and overclocks of 890/1780/2000 core/shader/mem clocks.). This overall is a good product if you just research your other options aside from ATI.

All I can say is try to get a ATI/AMD Graphics Card, they are relatively cheap and good bang for your buck

Sadly I cannot recommend any. I've personally got a XFX 9800 GTX. I've not been following the newer cards, my only reason for using nVidia, is I always have used them, and I've always heard Radeon has compatability issues, or it did at some point in time and I've just stuck with my brand.
I can say that even though it's a 9800 I have no problems running newer games, though things built on Cryo Engine tax my system. I think that's more CPU though.

This is quite biased,
All I can say is do your research. Look at all viable options and not just ATI, as Nvidia has one card which is pushing into the hd 5770/5830/5850 sector and is going at it strong.
But at the 160/150 price point the 5770 is quite the contender and the 200/230 price point the gtx 460 is strong as hell. The ranged below 430 and above 250 I would aim for the 5870 and above the 430 range would be dual gtx 460s as it is better by 30% than a gtx 480.

| Either a 5850 or a 5870 will last you for years, they are extremely powerful video cards that deliver a good bang for the buck. I would not recommend Nvidia's 400 series at the moment, because in my opinion they're quite a bit too expensive to make up for their heat/noise/power issues. If you really want Nvidia, and have a very high end case and psu, they would be okay, but otherwise I would aim towards ATI. I am not being biased towards either manufacturer, a year and a half ago I would have told you to get Nvidia, since they were in the lead then.

The HD5850 at one time cost a mere $250 that is until AMD had no competition, its price got jacked up. And with HD5000 series card you have two independent audio streams
Currently the GTX 460 is excellent in terms of price point and performance in the budget segment.
It's like the next 8800GT, cheap and fast but what is with those mini-hdmi ports?!
Why no regular hdmi instead? Zotac can do is why can't the rest?

Well you are obviously talking about the GTX 480/470/465 as the 460 idles at 27C and overclocked to 890 core and 2000mhz memory it load temps at 70C (much colder than my HD 4850) also, power issues? You can run two at 500watts.

Depends on how much you want to spend. At $200-$220, go for the GTX 460. At around $280, a lower-priced HD5850 is also a good choice. Both of the cards can play pretty much anything smoothly at high to max settings using a resolution of 1920x1080.

Nvidiafag here.
460GTX, imo, atm is the best card in its pricerange. Get the 1GB version though, because the lower ones are quite a bit worse.
The 460 doesn't run hot, nor does it consume much power.
The 465 is a piece of shit, do not get it. It's an extremely bad card.
The 480 is a great card but it does run a bit hot, and use quite a bit of power. If you have good air cooling, or water cooling, it'd be fine though.
Pretty sure the 5850 is a bit better than the 460GTX, but if you SLI the 460 its better.

just wanted to see which to buy of the two.
Didn't want to waste more money if I would be getting relatively the same thing from either card.
thanks for the replies/suggestions o.o
