Hello there fellow visitors and forum regulars. I'd like to ask a question concerning the relevance of code caves. I know, that the caves hail from a time long gone and can be considered a legacy (at least for memory hacking). However, I'd be interested to hear your input on instances where they are still viable and useful, maybe even critical to achieve a certain goal.
So, are code caves completely irrelevant for memory hacking or not? What do you think?

code caves are only useful if you edit the .exe file on disk or if you're on windows 9x

Yes that's what I meant by writing "at least for memory hacking". So, you never came across an instance where you had to resort to caves instead of allocation? Hypothetical speaking it might be possible for a target to hook the allocation api as part of an anti-cheating routine (or otherwise protect its space) but in that case the game will most likely also use other protection techniques that would make caves unusable.

it's a nice feature to have available but it is potentially dangerous since strictly speaking any page owned by a process is prone to being modified at any time. there is a tiny advantage in that you can save on memory by not allocating a new page but that advantage is so small, it's not worth thinking about
