I'm buying a new HDD just for data storage usage. I'm wondering if buying a 5400 rpm is worth the saved money (vs 7200 rpm). Any opinions?

If it's only going to be a storage drive then 5400RPM is fine.

If its just for storage get 1rpm. Since 5400rpm is the slowest, yes get that.

not really as slow as you'd think.

the green western digitals are pretty zippy.

Holy shit.
Is all WD Green drives 5400RP/M?
That would mean nearly every single HDD in my house is 5400RP/M. I thought they were 7200RP/M.

WD advertise their Green drive's rpm as "Intelliseek" which ranges from 5400 to 7200 depending on the work load. Although most say they haven't seen it reach up to its max.

Seagate's LP (green) drive operates at 5200

Storage drive = capacity > speed

For a storage only drive it'd be perfectly fine. You'll also have the benefit of it being quieter, running cooler, and consuming less power than a 7200rpm drive.
