| Thats actually pretty cool. It also shows that, in mice at least, you can't choose your sexuality.

There are a LOT of undiscovered genes, and i believe there are genes for everything, the way we behave. It seems logical, our genes control everything from our physical appearance to the way we act psychologicaly/behaviors etc. Since genes/DNA is the only thing that sperm/ova has determining everything about new offspring that will be born.
Environment does have an impact though but sexuality is something that would be controlled by genes. Since some people are overly sexual despite where they live and others not so much. Thats the same way with homos, their sexual orientation. I don't think environment has much to do with it.
I am not saying anything from research though, just my thoughts so i could be wrong .

| sexual reproduction existed way before a "complex" organism. it should be obvious that sexuality is genetic. plus, mice's genetics are close to humans.

Uhhh doesn't the 23rd pair of chromosomes in human DNA already determine sex?
And no one cares about mice.

k. I just don't get the hype on the "new" gene.

Well it is indeed gene 23 that determines you GENDER, not your sexual preference and activity though and as mice are good research material this may well be something verry interesting, really bro, care about stuff more.

k. I just don't get the hype on the "new" gene. | It's indicating that humans may or may not also have a gene controlling sexual preference, which would add new color to the age-old argument of whether or not people are born gay.

That's pretty much the bottom line. Anyways, it's waiting until they find a human gene or not right now.

So basically we can have 'lesbian' mice by altering this gene?

So basically we can have 'lesbian' mice by altering this gene? | you can't really alternate the gene. best you can do is selective breed the mice which express this gene. but something like this will take a long time.

Well recently scientists have created synthetic life which involved creating genes, so it is actually possible to alter genes.
