and I've never played DotA or HoN

How long will it take for me to get used to it, and will it suck at the beginning from not knowing what's going on? (So many champions I can't know what each one does and what to expect for a while)

Yes it will suck in the beginning. It takes time to remember skills and champions and what they do. I just started playing yesterday and I've played Dota before and it's still quite hard to adjust.

LoL has a bit of a smaller learning curve than DotA or HoN.

LoL has:
1. A matchmaking system that pairs you up with people around your level
2. Recommended items (which were revised not too long ago to better benefit new people)
3. A tutorial! (a really bad one, but it's better than nothing I suppose)

Once you get to know your way around LoL, and find champion(s) you like, you're pretty much set.

Best way to get better IMO is to solo queue. Playing practice games against bots doesn't help, because bots are easy as shit to take down (I can get up to 50 kills with no deaths fighting bots easy...)

I'm really competitive haha, I'm not as itnerested in learning 'how to play' as I am interested in feeling like nothing can touch me if I'm not being gank'd or counter-character'd (if LoL has a setup like that, where certain character choices vs. another will win every time(excluding support))
