he's not humming,

There are basically 2 metal rods sticking out of a box which create an electric field around them. Your hand disturbs the field, and this is detected. The 2 rods control pitch (the vertical one) and volume (the horizontal one). The closer to the rod you are the higher or (when you look at the other rod) more silent the created noise is.
