|
|
Me and my dad have been thinking of ideas, and he's decided that he needs a desktop.
So I'm going to rebuild mine, and build one for him using parts mine doesnt need.
Here is my current build.
CPU: Intel Core 2 Quad Q8200
CPU Cooler: Stock Intel Heatsink and Fan
Motherboard: Gigabyte EP45-UD3L
RAM: 4GB (2x 2GB)
GPU: 512MB ATI HD4850
Optical Drive: Sony 20x DVD RW
HDD: Western Digital 500GB SATA
Fans: 140mm Front, 120mm Back.
PSU: 550W Coolmaster
Case: Thermaltake Soprano DX
I would prefer to keep the case, as it fits nicely where my computer is.
I will most likely keep the HDD aswell.
But everything else is free game.
Any suggestions on what to do?

I was going to say 'give it to me' till I remembered this was a serious part of the forum, considering I know sh** all about it, that looks pretty good the way it is, what the hell are you trying to do?

Well, tbh this plan will most likely never come to fruition, but on the off chance that it does, I want to know how I can make it better.
To anyone 'in the know' how much cooling would I need to cross fire two HD4850's?

Its fine as is. Your only options of upgrade is really a better psu and gfx card. Besides that, you are stuck because you need a new motherboard to change cpu.

Just build your dad a nice decent desktop without breaking the bank.

No point upgrading from a core2quad to a i5, is like upgrading 955 to 1050XT
that $500 wasted could be off to a better use, such as 4850 crossfire.
4850 crossfire doesn't take that much heat as Fermi, it would be running a 4870 temp, and much higher tdp full loaded at most.

On a low resolution monitor?
So how's that constant 60fps v-sync working out?
Way to go champ.

Trucido, the only things that could possibly be concieved as wrong with your computer would be that socket 775 is out of date (it's actually not out of date, it's only reached the point that people shouldn't build brad new computers with it) and that the 4850 is also slightly out of date. If you care, there are plenty of equally muscled video cards in the 5000 series that have far lower power consumption (ie the 5700 series). Otherwise, the 4850 is still more than relevant in terms of raw power. DX11 isn't really that important.
I would just be more than satisfied with your computer, and start thinking about building a new one in 3 years.

He wants to upgrade his shit and give his dad whats out of date. I'm doing the same except giving my sisters mine and getting new with the budget I was handed.

Just because you have money to waste, doesn't mean you should waste it.
Just like KLS said, build him one that doesn't cost more of a gaeman desktop.
