Which distribution should I use? It will be my first time using Linux so I don't want anything that requires any coding skill in any language.

http://torrent.fedoraproject.org/
just get the full dvd (fedora 12, not 13) and boot off it
go through the install menu and then at the end just tick the box for dual boot if it isn't on already
it'll install grub for you and sets up the basic dualboot between window and linux
also, if it's your first time, you might want to try out using the live cd

EDIT: Wait they don't have x64? I have 8gb of RAM I would be very sad if I couldn't use them.

Also, make sure you already have an empty partition to use(at least 20GB is recommended), while linux can resize partititions, it's better if it's done beforehand (so you don't accidentally re-size the wrong disk...)

Whilst surely not to anger you, I went ahead and asked /g/ since your reply was a little slow. They advised me to use Ubuntu and install it with Wubi, it worked pretty well and I am currently dual-booting Ubuntu and Win7. Is Fedora that much better in your opinion?

I prefer the new Ubuntu over F12. Fedora seemed to like kernel panic on my laptop, Ubuntu 10.04 runs slick.
Also, you should partition yourself during the installation. Wubi sucks.

Yeah I did a clean install on my second HDD of it because Wubi kept breaking.

I prefer fedora because it's not so bloated (at least last time I used ubuntu it came with a lot of desktop widgets and other stuff that I didn't need)
also, fedora 13 has just been released

I'm really not a fan of Ubuntu as a distro. Besides the fact that it installs like a jillion packages and drivers I'm never going to use, 10.04 made some changes ostensibly solely for the sake of change. What's with the window decoration now? I had a whole list of complaints but I discarded it when I popped out the USB drive. Better to leave this one for somebody else.
I like Fedora more than Ubuntu, though it has some similar "problems" (in my opinion they are problems). ESR gave up on the Fedora project for Ubuntu because of some problem with package management, but if he still uses Ubuntu, I've given up hope on him.

Of course I do, but as the majority of users do use the GNOME desktop environment, I can't expect the same support when going the minimal install route and installing dwm or something the average user wouldn't normally mess around with. (eg. compare Kubuntu to a real KDE distro.) And even then, there's not much difference between a minimal install and a base system installation of a different distro -- just like you said, it's still GNU/Linux. Biggest difference would be package management, and I'm not in love with APT or anything that I'd choose Ubuntu over Arch or a compile-centric distro.

pacman is an awesome manager but Arch is a toy distro. I don't understand what you mean by "I can't expect the same support...". DWM is the same on any OS you install it on, you wont need support from any Ubuntu specific community.

DWM was a pretty terrible example; KDE was a bit better. I think I'm just thrown off a bit by how much software Ubuntu ships with that I'll never want or use. Arch is alright to try out new combinations of software, but I think I'm in the market for a new distro...
