I saved a document in word and it is listed in recent documents, and when I open it it says that the file can not be located. I saved it in my documents.

Did you reboot? It sounds liek it saved to the temp and went bye bye D:. I really do not think you can recover it. My mom had this happen to her. It caused her to get a bad grade on one of her college tests.

Did you use Office 2007?
If so, click on the Orb in the top left, and there will be a list of like 20 of your last saves.

Word 2007 creates AutoRecover files. The default directory is %AppData%\Microsoft\Word.
