About a few months ago my screen would randomly blank out for a few seconds and then come back on, thinking that it wasn't a huge deal, I just dealt with it. But yesterday as I was playing GTA4 I've notice pretty stars across the screen and said to self, I never saw this in the game before (the setting was in the night time). And all of a sudden my game froze and the whole screen if fill with artifacts.

After restarting and testing my graphic card, it still did the same thing, thus comes to the conclusion the card I've got for 4 years is now dead.

So for a new graphics, I'm heading for the HD5000 series and here are some questions before making my final decision (all answers are appreciated)

1. How are the HD5000 series graphic cards?
2. Are the fans quiet (post the model that you have, a link to it is preferred)
3. If your playing games do you get smooth frame rate (post the game your playing and resolution used)?

My price range from $200-350

1.My 5770 is great, I run TF2, CSS, and crysis at max settings
2.Depends what the fan is set at, at 50% you can't hear it, 65% you can hear it not to loud, 80% not too quiet.
3.TF2 usually keeps a frame rate of 70+, 1600x900 Res.

They are good but from how I hear it, there is a worldwide issue that requires latest drivers to solve. Something about grey screen of death at random times in low usage apps and videos. But they are all around good stuff. Go 57xx and higher, anything else is shit power.

58xx series only, 5770 is for poorfags with 1280x1024 resolution
eitherway the 5xxx series are past MSRP and fuckload expensive

Since when does a CM HAF become a laptop chassis?

Back to topic, thanks for the responses.
I'll be running game at my native resolution (1920x1200) or lowering it depending on the situation, so a high-end card is what I had in mind.

The HD5770's price is attractive, but its narrow 128bit is a huge turn down since my current card has 512bit, so going from 512bit down to 128bit is like switching from a Porsche Sypder to this
And yes, the architecture of the card plays a important role too.

With all that said, the cards will be in the HD5800 series most likely the HD5850. After checking out newegg, the XFX is pretty good (used them before) and its double lifetime is the main selling point. But doing some research on that model and found out, it does not even exist on XFX website!?
Further investigation is that card uses a non reference PCB which uses cheaper components and does not support voltage overclock (software) and the cooling fan is in the center card thus instead of blowing hot air out of the vents, it blows it at both directions.

Speaking of the fan, don't like that design as it looks to be a cheap quality build which will go out sooner then those turbine style fans.
And it blows the hot air at both directions instead of directly out of the case.
Now all other brand of HD5850 looks to be that way with the non-reference cooler (don't know if they still got the reference PCB for voltage overclocking).

Maybe I'll go with HIS HD5850 (1 year warranty :\) or hope I can find a reference design XFX from somewhere else.

The 5770 does have 128 bit, but I'm pretty sure you're mixing up the memory size in your card with the bit size. I wouldn't be surprised if your 4 year old card had 512 megabytes of memory, but I would be highly surprised if it had 512 megabytes of 512 bit memory. The 5770 has 1 gb of memory.

My current (broken) card is a HD2900XT
It's got 1GB of GDDR4 with a 512bit memory interface.
During that time its either the 8800GTX or HD2900XT since they both cost exactly the same.

The 1GB was mostly sold as a OEM, thus no fancy box when it arrived.
This is the card that I have

the HD 2900 XT 1024MB remains exactly the same as its 512MB brother. So, you still get 700 million transistors incorporating 320 stream processors, the super high bandwidth 512-bit memory interface

That must have cost a mint back in the day. Whatever, buy a 5850, it'll eat all of your games at 150 fps. It doesn't matter, anything above 170 bucks will be twice (or more) as good than your old card, bits aside.

I didn't really read it. It was too funny.

anyway just buy a 5850 or a 5770 if you're cheap/poor.
