Assuming the password isn't long as shit and he knows at least some part of it, I'd say it's entirely possible to do in a short period of time.

SF is right, if he knows a part of the password there are enough bruteforcers that will do it quick enough.

it's easily possible to come up with a password that you'll never crack in your lifetime, or the lifetime of the universe for that matter.

a bit of an exaggeration, no ? bearing in most cases, we would only have to come up with a hash collision. i use 'only' loosely there, but doubt it extends to the timeframe you are suggesting

a pretty simple numbers password
lets say
153486759426
(( its a pattern on the numpad ))
12 digits, ok pretty fair and crackable IF you know it is a numbers password and it only haves exactly 1 billion possible combinations.
if you don't you have to take in consideration numbers and letters and that makes the possibilities raise by trillions. and even more if you go for numbers + character + special characters
a password can easily be
P@$$W0rd
which is HELL Hard to crack and the time for that simple 8 characters password is over a year on a single PC
