I think it's a power issue. When I plug it into my laptop, it'll short out and shut my laptop off completely. When I do get it plugged in, my external hard drive will stay on red (not working properly) and won't detect on my laptop..
Any ideas?

Most likely an insufficient PSU (battery). Not really anything you can do about it that I can think of.

but when I don't have my EHD plugged in at all, it'll still be red.

I have and extarnal Hard disk that requires its own 9V PSU
are you sure yours dont need one ?

wobble the usb lead on the side where it's connected to the hdd, one of mine does the same thing sometimes from a fault connection that i'm too lazy to fix.
