As of today, April 20, 2010, Bejeweled Blitz 3 has been modified to swart the cheat that allows you to change the number of unique gems on the board. Now I'm looking for a way to use Cheat Engine to find its location again.

Originally, the game is played with 7 different gems. When you reduce this count, it makes it easier to make sequences of 3, 4 and 5. 6 and 5 gems are still challenging; 4 is hard not to make sequences; and 3 unique gems is a perpetual atomic reaction that, once started, may never stop...it’s funny to watch, once.

Here is what we used to do to cheat the gems:
Using HxD, simply search for “600366da0c660e” and replace with “24040202020202”. This would give you 4 gems. It will only find and replace one occurrence.
or: 24030202020202 (3 gems)
or: 24050202020202 (5 gems)
or: 24060202020202 (6 gems)

As you can tell, the 4th most significant hex digit (from the left) is your gem count. What is odd is that no where in the search string does the digit ‘7’ occur.

Now, of course, this technique fails to cheat; it no longer locates the search string, “600366da0c660e”. And since HxD is not sophisticated enough to do the job, I’m enlisting Cheat Engine to solve this problem.

I tried searching for a ‘7’ with no luck; I end up finding thousands. Since this ‘7’ is a constant, I don’t even know what technique I should use to find it. I need ideas. The only one I can think of is that the game must access the rand() system call when making new gems, so I could track it from there, but I’m not sure the best way to do that.

Anyone have any ideas?

Sincerely Yours,
