I am attempting to recover a laptop. The laptop used to belong to the commissioner of the Papua New Guinea Customs Service. He is so technology illiterate.
He has highly important work documents on the harddrive.
I was thinking of plugging it into my computer and copying the files he needed, after checking they are virus free, then reformatting.
Is there a live boot CD for this sort of thing? I will remove my harddrives from my computer to stop the virus infecting my stuff.
He also told me to name a price for recovering the laptop. What do you guys think is reasonable?

if you know what you are doing you can do it quite fast even though this recovery task is classified as medium-advanced.
you can charge your client from 100$ to 150$ depending on how much it takes you to get the file.

Write a fucking agreement first because you take any payment, unless the person trust you very well.
Then get some live Linux distro, Debian, Ubuntu, blah blah

I have removed the viruses from the HDD, it was easy. Now I just need to put the recovered files onto a USB and reformat. However, there are some top secret files on here about investment habits of government officials. PNG is a pretty corrupt country, but some of this is just shocking. Maybe a K1000 ($400US) pricetag on these files would be appropriate. I mean, billions of kina go missing every year from corruption, so they can afford it.

Yup. Turns out there was less than 100mb of actual work related documents. There was 10gb of music, 10gb of personal photos and a shitload of karaoke DVD rips.
