|
|
CPU specs:
Name: Intel Core i7 920 2.67GHz (bloomfield)
Package: Socket 1366 LGA
Technology: 45nm
Core Voltage: ~ 1V average
Motherboard specs:
MSI X58 Pro-E (MS-7522) 3.0 rev. 12
Chipset: Intel 82801JR (ICH10R)
Could someone please explain how to overclock my CPU.
Also my friend told me about these things called "In OS overclocking tools", what are these and is there one available for my setup?

Well as far as ive heard, you should have a really good cooling system before you attempt overclocking.
Im not really sure about this, but last time i tried overclocking my graphics card, it over heated and died.

Certainly buy an aftermarket cooler before you do anything. Then, the basic idea is to boost the power going to your processor in bios and adjust the frequency.
This is a nice article.

actually easyTune6 is pretty good, it came in my gigabyte motherboard drivers CD.
Zelda_454> I would recommend you not to start overclocking if at least your active temp is 50°C

You need a good cooling system. A stock fan will commit suicide if you OC.

You say it like there's some sensor in your processor that will detect if you're using a stock heatsink and trigger an explosion if you try to OC. You can do it on a stock heatsink as long as you have good temperatures. Sometimes Intel/AMD package relatively good heatsinks with their CPUs. Of course, any non-shit aftermarket cooler will allow you to overclock better than a stock heatsink, however if you don't feel like coughing up the extra money, you can always try tiny increments as it is now.

I thought the i7 stock cooler was no good. I think $50 for a decent cooler is worth the performance gains of overclocking.
Not that you can't overclock without overvolting.

OK, well I won't try just yet, looks like I need better cooling.

Not that you can't overclock without overvolting. | It most likely isn't, that isn't to say you can't overclock a little with it. I mean, each i7 is going to run more or less efficient than the next.
@Zelda, you don't even know what your temps are, so how can you possibly know if you need a better cooling system or not? This is what you should do: Download any program that reads temperatures of your computer, post them on here so we can evaluate how cool your processor is vs. the temperature where it starts to throttle (100C for i7s). Then you should think of how much you want to overclock, how fast you want your processor running. Then you should try moving up by a tiny increment and see how that affects your temperatures (provided they aren't already too high to start overclocking, we'll tell you when you post your temps).

What made you assume I don't know my temps? At boot my mobo is 50, peak is 72...

They can safely operate up to 100C, so you're good to go. Again, try starting with small increments and see how they affect the temperature.

If you want to be OCed for everyday stuff, you'll probably want to stress test with Prime95, to check up on temps and stability power-wise. It's recommended to have that running at least overnight...

I'd recommend an Asus Silent Square Pro. I have one on my LGA775 board and it keeps my Core 2 E8500 @3.6GHz down to 37C on idle, never really goes much over 60C on a Prime95 torture test. Not 100% sure it'll fit an i7 board, so check if you're thinking of buying.
Regarding in-OS overclocking tools, be very careful. You have to remember that when you're in the BIOS, the only thing the CPU and memory have to deal with is the miniscule amount of resources consumed by BIOS operations. When you're in the OS, there's a whole lot extra going on. If there's an error due to your overclocking getting too much for the hardware, your machine could BSOD and still be sat at a dangerously high temperature. If you don't catch it in time, you could kill your CPU, RAM or even your board. In the BIOS this isn't as much of an issue, since it automatically hard-reboots in most cases.
My personal experience with such tools has been negative, and I'd suggest sticking to the tried-and-tested BIOS options.
