I'm pro gay-rights, meaning I think they ought to be able to get married, serve in the forces and such, but one thing still puzzles me ethically.

Gay adoption or a gay man raising a kid with another gay man.

I'm not talking about whether gays would be good parents, hell, more heteros are fucking terrible parents, but unlike marriage, the idea of a mother and a father isn't a religious issue, it's a real, scientific issue. Children are meant to be naturally born to a mother and a father and the family unit is biologically encoded into us. Tests have proven that there are certain paternal and maternal instincts as well as behavioural differences between a man and a woman who have entered a relationship. Of course this is all caveman stuff but it's still there.

Homosexual relationships I'm fine with, but homosexuality ought to end with sexual preference. Two men who are gay and are together are in a sexual relationship. that is what defines their relationships. Heteros also enter a sexual relationship but sometimes with the aim of making it a parenting relationship, and some parents that have split up still maintain a friendly parenting relationship in order to support the child.

Unlike marriage and sexual union, parenting is, quite definitely, a man and a woman. Adoption is just a weird quirk of society, but other animals also 'adopt' young members of their packs, flocks etc. IVF makes it possible for a surrogate to give birth to a gay man's child who will then raise it with another gay man, but that child isn't in a parenting relationship and is just being raised by his father and a gay man sharing a sexual relationship.
