depends on the xeon. the xeon X3450 is an i5 with higher grade silicon and hyperthreading.

it probably just gets selected from a "better" part of the die wafer, i think the center tends to be better off than the more outer parts of it. the center is supposedly where the silicon is at its purest... even though the entire thing is probably 99.99% silicon or whatever.
whatever isn't up to whatever standard probably just gets binned as something else.
they look pretty much identical to the 1156 i7's, which you can get from microcenter for about $200.

Xeon are better at overclocking while using lower voltages than its desktop variant and able to withstand a higher temp.
There are designed for work in a 24/7 enviroment, but with its different microcode not all motherboards will support it.
I've got myself a Xeon X3350 which its desktop version is the Core 2 Quad Q9450 and that time the Xeon was actually cheaper.
