Game specific hacks are illegal, hacking tools such as Cheat Engine, which is not at all game specific is legal (yes, DB could take money for CE, but luckily he don't )

well, it is still arguable
this is a abuse complaint I got:
| Quote: |
The website www.cheatengine.org offers a program for download at http://www.cheatengine.org/downloads.php which is involved in and is proliferating illegal computer activity that is being used to cause monetary harm to our product. The program not only harms our game but potentially many other games which in turn of course affects the livelihoods and numerous businesses that rely on the legitimate uses of software .
We are requesting the removal of this site from hosting due to it's
perpetuation of illegal activity and that all records be maintained for
criminal investigation of the parties behind the programs.
|
of course, it'll be pretty hard to prove that the 'harm to their product' is caused by cheat engine, and not by artmoney, ollydbg, mhs, windbg, etc...

afaik no real action can be taken against you. as long as you don't encroach in their IP somehow or some way, i don't see how they could do anything.
against the terms of service to use is another story

Law system is just too retarded - fact. This has been proven many times. Even more true when it comes to virtual world, yes they can sue if they want, for ANYTHING. The important part is whether they can prove it to be illegal. To discuss legality of something like cheat engine that operates on such technical level requires professionals with knowledge and common sense not a bunch of noobs that feel like gods if they can use email, facebook and M$ word. A few thoughts: Is it legal to read public book? is conceptually equal to scanning memory. Patching software might seem illegal but what if you write YOUR software that reads memory without any kind of modifications to client and then write a bot that just imitates user behavior? Blizzard sued wow glider and won lol so yeah, no idea what kind of implementation it employs though.

Dont really care , i got CE, and i could bypass it if i wanted to (sure is a long time since i updated my UCE, but i just didn't bother...)
And WoW Glider was aimed at WoW only, therefore WoW was able to sue them.

| SO what do you guys think, should I give it a go and sell my memory scanner without worries of getting messages from anti-hacking software companies and game companies telling me to stop?
