When I bought an Acer PC a while ago, it came with 1GB.
It was said that the maximum Memory is 2GB.
But I wanted more, so before I bought 4GB, I took my Acer PC to a local PC store and asked him if he can install 4GB Ram for me to see if it works.
And it did work. But then I didn't want to upgrade to 4GB lol.

it lies. You can have 2gb ram if you want. If it wont find it all, installing vanilla copy of windows should fix that. It can physically hold 2 gb, guessing its dual channel.

A retail copy of Windows (eg: the ones you see on racks of shops).

Hmm... it appears that your computer can indeed support up to 2GB of RAM. A vanilla copy isn't really needed IMO.
Anyways, you can go ahead and try, though be forewarned that you still run the risk of wasting your money by only able to utilize 1GB out of 2GB of RAM.
A better solution is to get a newer computer entirely, seeing how old your computer is already...

Don't worry about the wasting money, it's free shipping and comes with a lifetime warranty, so if it doesn't use the other 1gb then i can always return it.
Also, my parents aren't ever going to get me a new computer, they won't even buy me a 360.
