so i recently got another old computer for free. it came with 512 mb of ram, with the ati x200 using 128 mb of it. i put in my old 512 mb stick, and now the gpu is using 386 mb of ram. whats wrong?

The 128MB of RAM you see there belongs to the graphics card itself.
Could be the system automatically allocating more memory to the display functions...

Wow this is an old pc. My dads intel mobo has this chipset, and you can go into the bios and allocate a fixed amount. Try it. Usually most mobos can select a fixed amount of video ram.

it appears that the computer is only recognizing one of the 256 mb sticks, giving me 768 mb of ram. how can i get it to recognize the other stick?

no, when i remove the 512 the other 2 work fine. the 256 sticks are in a dual channel setup.

The motherboard probably doesn't like 2*256MB and 1*512MB sticks being used at the same time.
