Japanese is very easy once you learn the writing system. The grammar forms are very similar and easy to learn once you get down particles. Depending on how hard your teacher is, you won't learn any Kanji in your first year, just Hiragana and Katakana, the two basic writing styles.
I took it for 2 years and it was a great experience, although I lived in Japan for 6 years so it had more uses than living somewhere else (Sounds as though you are in Europe (Year 9 = 8th grade)). It's also very unique since there aren't really any other countries that use it as a primary language where as French is used in many countries and taught in many schools. I wish the school I was in now offered Japanese, you should take the chance.

6th or 7th grade in the US depending on what state you live in. If you're going to be a manga artist, then it is a very good choice.
If you want to get a head-start on things I recommend that you start to learn the first writing system (hiragana), here's a chart.
Don't be intimidated! Start by learning all of the basic vowel forms and write them down. Don't continue learning until you have memorized the previous set. You should learn them in this order (from experience)
1) a i u e o
2) ka ki ku ke ko
3) sa shi su se so
4) ta chi tsu te to
etc.
The symbols to the left of the English symbols are the second form (Katakana)

My brother whom is 21, took him 6months to learn the two basic writing styles you said. And hes about to have an exam for all the three primary parts.

I spent about a year learning them, it wasn't a dedicated Japanese class however, I was in a Japanese Immersion program where we would spend 30 minutes-1 hour every day practicing and we'd go to Japanese schools etc. because I went to a military school while living in Japan.

In the USA you can't learn any languages until your in the 9th grade aka Highschool.
I know this because I'm in 7th and I can't choose a language.
Also Japanese is very interesting I plan on taking it in Highschool and College.

You can take courses at a community college in your off time from school (Shouldn't be too expensive... well, for a 7th grader maybe, but for joe schmoe not-so-much.), or just learn on your own. There's several books on learning Japanese and a boatload of programs. I've heard pretty good things about Rosetta Stone, for example.
If you're going to learn a language, its best to learn it as early in life as possible, as it tends to get harder to learn the older you get (due to language development.).

Since Demonoid went down I can't find a copy of Rosetta Stone that doesn't have a virus attached to it.
So if someone could PM me with a link.

To tell you the truth, it isn't hard at all to learn it.
It's easier if you know a few languages already. It's just a mix and mingle of different sounds. Once you have basic wording down (arigato, sayonara, ichi nichi juu, etc.) You'll get the hang of it.

My school offers French and Spanish (middle school), it doesn't apply to all schools in the US, some have more money than others.

Japanese is a really hard language to learn, I am in 10th grade and I'm taking it this year, you will get RAPED in Japanese class if you don't have a large amount of dedication and if you have older Japanese students in your class expect to get a lot of shit about your grammar/writing style. There are different ways to wright each Japanese character and you have to learn to do them right or you have to go back and relearn all the characters along with the correct stroke orders. Also, you have to be able to talk to 1 person in front of you and possibly point to certain things like in my school, (y'know, a skit). You also have to have a lot of free time and will study every night, because if your teacher is as big as a hardass as mine, he will throw 150 point exams at you randomly 1ce a month. (Beware: Schools/teachers are not agenst you, language learning takes a lot of practice so don't call yourself a failure (too fast)...
---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Edit: There is also like 3 different alphabets Kanji, Romanji, and! Hirigana! You will most likley learn Hirigana because it is the most basic, Romanji is the Englishlike translation and Kanji is a 50,000 alphabet (much too learn within a span of even 20 years)
Goodluck buddeh.

I think it all goes down to how much effort you're willing to put forth. Some say it's easy, some say it's hard.
