Played some more today... it got better. The more you play, the more shit you find out. Like today, I figured out that you can find "artifacts" which increase your skills/abilities/stuff and elemental artifacts add elemental shit, like fire damage to your bird (if you're hunter).
I also figured out that the more you use a certain class of weapons (like shotgun, pistol, or rifle), they level up and are able to do more damage and shit.
Game just gets better and better.

Because that certainly makes a difference in the gameplay.
