Well this guy asked me at a tech store that I volunteer at, he wanted to SLI GTX 275's. And I thought OK, but then he asked me "what kind of cpu would i need to make sure that it doesn't bottleneck?" Now of course i could name expensive ones but he wanted like the bare minimum one he could buy, but could handle the SLI. Anyone know? Also he hasn't picked his motherboard yet so it could be any socket.

@Saifallofjmr
What the fuck.
@OP
Finally found a benchmark I had been looking for for months.
For the benchmark:
A Core i7 965 on a
ASUS X58 Rampage 2 Extreme
and a Core 2 Duo E8400 on:
ASUS X48 Deluxe mainboard (ATI graphics cards)
nForce 680i SLI (NVidia cards)
tested with all of these graphics card configurations:
GeForce GTX 280 1024MB, 2-way, 3-way
GeForce GTX 260 896, 2-way
GeForce 9800 GX2, Quad
Radeon 4870, 2-way
Radeon 4870 X2, 2-way
The point is to show that given enough power in the video card department, the CPU is definitely going to be a bottleneck (mostly at resolutions below a 30" monitor).

So would an I7 be a better choice? I also have to ask him about his resolution.

Since your job is to sell stuff then just make up some BS and make him buy crappy parts for the highest amount as possible. Screw the customers!
lol j/k.
Seriously now, the very first question you should ask to see if he know what is SLI and the benefits of having it.
If he can't answer that question or says a stupid response (all my friends have it),
then you know he knows nothing and this
is the time for you to take control.
Taking control does not mean for you to lie to him or make him get crappy parts, but to educate and make him learn.
As for which CPU is the best for your customer, ask how much he's willing to spend and what does he want to do besides gaming.
Take that and then put it into a CPU that's best bang for his buck without the compromise of features.
For Intel, start with a Q8400 and work your way up. If the customer is nearing the Core i7 price range then introduce Core i7 to him instead.
For AMD, start with a Phenom II X4 810.
IMHO, SLI and XFire is nothing more than marketing BS where performance gained does not justify the price.
From the amount saved from getting a 2nd card, it's can be used into something that's necessary like a extra hard drive for backup purposes or more memory.

Thanks for the advice KSL, I spoke with him and told him about SLI
and such.
So what he decided on is to get an Phenom X4 955 and to get a 4870X2 instead, so he has good graphical horsepower and a good cpu to boot. Thanks for the help guys.

That'll CPU will seriously bottleneck his graphic card. He'd be better off with an E8400.
EDIT: Wait, Phenom II 955 or Phemon I 9550? The whole Phenom I line sucked ass.
